Deutscher Akademischer Austauschadienst (DAAD)

The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) is a joint organization of German institutions of higher education which has been commissioned with promoting academic relations between German and foreign higher education institutions, primarily through the exchange of students, graduates and academics. DAAD, first established in 1925 on the initiative of academic circles, at the end of 2003, its membership totaled 231 higher education institutions and 125 student bodies from various types of higher education institutions. DAAD continues the academic activities via especial variants of the structured mobility programmes such as Socrates, Erasmus, Tempus, and Leonardo da Vinci in Germany and all over the world. The goals, roles and programmes of the DAAD in education and research, granting scholarships to foreign and German students, graduates, academies and scientists, and its close cooperation with other foundation such as Max Planck Foundation and Alexander von Humboldt will be elaborated in the article.
