Aim: The aim of this study was to examine the role of
metacognitive state and its components on academic
performance. Method: 150 high school students (64
male, 75 female) were selected based on cluster
sampling from 2&6 educational borough of city of
Tehran. They were completed oʹneill and Abedi (1996)
Metacognitive State Questionnaire. Their first semester
mean of the educational year was used as an indicator
of scholastic performance. Multiple regression
analyzes and t test for two independent groups were
applied to the data. Results revealed a positive
association between metacognitive state and academic
performance. Three metacognitive state components:
metacognition awareness, self monitoring and
cognitive strategies, predicted 69% of academic
performance variance. Conclusion: according to the
findings of this study, metacognitive state is associated
with academic performance. So that the metacognitive
state components training can influence academic
performance.
