A Comparison of the Nematocidal Effects of Hydro-Alcoholic Extract of Chicory and Albendazole in Mouse (White Syrian Mouse)

Chicory is among the widely-used herbs in Iran and even it is used as a vegetable in everyday dishes. Various parts of chicory are reported to have pharmaceutical compounds. In this research the nematocidal effects of hydro-alcoholic extract of chicory and albendazole are compared with each other. The stools of three groups of mice were tested for nematoda infection. In some samples eggs of Aspicularis of Oxiuridae family were found. The infected animals underwent autopsy and mature nematoda were observed. Then, the number of eggs in the stool were counted using Clayton Lane method. Since the mice were kept at a single place, at the beginning of the test, the infection was equally the same in all the three groups. The first group was fed with edible Albendazole suspension. Hydro-alcoholic extract of chicory was injected in the peritoneum of the second group members. Both medicines were administered for 15 days. The third group was kept in the similar condition as the control group. The numbers of eggs were counted in the stools of the groups in order to study the level of population with nematoda. To be added, on the zero day (one day before the experiment) the number of eggs were equally high in all the three groups. Afterwards, the numbers of eggs were counted in all the three groups. Albendazole destroyed the infection as of the 4th day. Chicory extract eliminated the infection after the 2nd week. While in the control group eggs of the nematodes could be found.
