Iodine deficiency can cause goiter and insufficient psychosomatic growth in humans. Iodine deficiency is a major health concern different areas of Iran such as in Zagros, Alborz, and Binalood. To prevent IDDs in Iran, table salt has been fortified with 40 ppm of Iodate since 1989. The percentage of iodine deficiency is 10 in 2000. The present study aimed to assess and monitor program success. In this study 1116 students from both sexes were investigated, of which 430 students (aged 7-11 years) were from 20 randomly selected primary schools and 686 students (aged 12-14 years) were from 20 secondary schools in Neyshaboor. Early morning urine samples were collected for evaluation of iodine status. The mean urinary iodine concentration was 3.84+/-2.54µg/d1 for the whole sample, below the threshold suggested by the WHO (<10y g/dl), was indicative of moderate iodine deficiency. In 96.3% students the level of iodine in urine was less than 10µg/dl. In the later group 31.9% were severely deficient (<4g/d0,45.4% were moderately deficient (2-4.9912g/d1) and 19% mildly deficiency(4.99-9.99µg/dl). The mean urinary iodine excretion in boys was 3.82+/-2.70µ g/dl and in girls was 3.85+1-2.46u g/dl and did not show any significant difference(p Value=0.85 ), this difference was not also significant between primary (392+/-2.71µ01) and secondary (3.78+/-2.51µg/dl) students, (P Value=0.16). The results of this cross-sectional study suggested that the iodine status of many school children is not adequate.
