Excerpt Translation of Poetry: Conditions and Requirements

ترجمه منظومه‏هاي بلند گاهي چنان دشوار مي‏نمايد كه برخي از مترجمان را بر آن مي‏دارد كه تنها به برگردان ابياتي گزينشي از آنها بسنده ‏كنند. در اين ترجمه‏هاي «گزينش‏گرانه»، بايد شروطي رعايت شوند كه تخلف از آنها ممكن است موجب شود كه ترجمه، حتي با وجود دقت در برگردان كلمات شعر اصلي، از جان‎مايه و غرض اصلي‏ شعر دور افتد و در بدترين حالت، برگردان محرّفي از آن باشد. مقاله حاضر بر آن است تا ضمن بررسي نقادانه نمونه‏اي از ترجمه فارسي بندهايي از منظومه بلند به يادبود اي. اچ. اچ. سروده آلفرد لرد تنيسون، شروط لازم ترجمه گزينش‏گرانه شعر را برشمارد، كه عبارت‎اند از حفظ زمينه‎هاي «زباني» و «زماني» شعر اصلي. عدم توجه به اين دربايست‏ها در ترجمه مورد نظر موجب شده است كه جان‎مايه و غرض شعر يكسره متفاوت با آنچه هست به نظر آيد، آن‏چنان ‏كه تعليقات مترجم نيز به جبران اين مشكل كمترين كمكي نكرده است. در پايان، ترجمه فارسي ديگري از همين بندهاي شعر ذكر مي‏شود كه در آن، دربايست‎هاي ديگري كه، در كنار شروط مذكور، بر روي هم، «شرط كافي» براي امكان ترجمه گزينش‎گرانه شعر شمرده مي‎شوند، رعايت شده است؛ مي‎توان گفت كه اين ترجمه منظوم، علاوه بر جان‎مايه و غرض شعر، جنبه‏هاي صوري و زيبايي‏شناختي شعر را نيز، تا اندازه‏اي، منتقل كرده است.

The translation of long poems tends to be such a demanding job that some translators may content themselves with the rendering of a selection of the poems’ lines. Such “excerpt” translations need to meet certain conditions without which they are either far removed or diverted from the true themes and purposes of the originals, despite the fact that they may be apparently faithful to the literal meanings of the words. Having examined an example of Persian translation of a few stanzas from In Memoriam A. H. H., a long poem by Alfred Lord Tennyson, The present paper is going to enumerate the necessary conditions for the sound excerpt translation of poems: the adherence to the “linguistic” and “temporal” contexts of the original poem. The disregard for these conditions in the Persian translation has caused it to be a far cry from what the poem really is about, and none of the translator’s comments has compensated for the loss either. Finally, there comes another Persian translation of the same stanzas which has met, along with the aforesaid conditions, other requirements that constitute collectively “the sufficient condition” for a successful excerpt translation of a long poem; this versified translation seems to convey, to some extent, the formal aesthetic aspects of the original too.
